How to make your developer stick around?

If you’re a non-technical founder you’re probably thinking of hiring a developer as a long-term contractor. It is risky but there’s a simple way to mitigate this risk.

Just last month I heard this heartbreaking story from a non-techie founder.

— I hired this guy via Upwork. He did great. Then we decided to move off the platform to avoid the unnecessary pay-cuts. But as soon as we made an agreement and he started working for me directly everything changed. First, his response time grew x2. Then he stopped answering my emails. Finally, I had to break the contract and go find someone else. But so much precious time is lost!

Another story that actually made me cry.

We launched the product on PH and in 2 weeks the contractor said he’s got a better offer. We only started onboarding subscribers for beta, no paying users yet. What are we supposed to do now? Put everything on hold because our start dev is gone?

Unfortunately, things like this happen. More often than we’d want to. It can be a developer you’re counting on. A salesperson, a digital marketing contractor. Anyone. If a team member is gone with the wind in the middle of the product life circle — it’s not always a death blow, but it’s definitely a major headache. You’d want to avoud it. What are your options?

1. Stick with the platform
